Hooray for Ask GameJew :) Anyway, the key is to make sure the connectors are, well, connecting. Blowing helps get dust off, and everything else is just making sure the connectors on the cartridge touch the connectors in the NES itself. I've found wiggling the cartridge in the NES helps.
