I'd also recommend Prof. David Flusser's book "Jesus" or the updated version of it "The Sage from Galilee: Rediscovering Jesus' Genius." Also, any books by Prof. Brad H. I just knew I have to read more on the history, culture, politics of the Yehudim/Israelites in reference to the Roman occupation. smadewell ::: Favorites  2008-01-07 22:18:27 Actually, it alludes back to the vote regarding the "18 Decrees" (circa 20-10 BC), which sought to legislate greater separation between Jews & Gentiles. Hillel & Menachem the Essene were against this for economic & ideological reasons, but Shammai pushed for these "18 Decrees" & even got the Zealots to murder a number of Hillel's prophets in order to swing the vote in his favor. Yeshua alludes to these slayings in Matt. 23:29f. __________________________________________________
