I completely understand where you are coming from. I agree with the fact that Broadway is not what it used to be. Sure, Avenue Q is fun to watch but it's really the classics that made going to a Broadway show make you feel as if you were an elite part of society. In the case of Grey Gardens, yes, it was a fun show to watch and I think Christine did a great job but I agree with you it wasn't the same as a Phantom of the Opera. Snobbery this is not, just opinions.

Austin, why should Christine need to "embody all the characteristics of a crazy Long Island woman" in order for this performance to be successful? There's an awful lot of snobbery filling up this page. (Oh, dear, oh, dear . . .) Christine is a first-rate performer, but this show was unworkable and that's why it closed sooner than expected. You people make Broadway seem stale.

I disagree with the last comment. I think Christine completely embosies all the Characteristics of a crazy Long Island woman while playing this character. If she didnt present the character as she does, the show would have been dull. Its called acting and she clearly knows how to do it.

her voice is much too high and grating, Edies was much more melodic and pleasant, it doesn't translate at all, the magic of the documentary was the fact that they couldn't/wouldn't integrate into society as they were so eccentric

Thanks for setting me straight, gmr2etc. I'm sure the show was fantastic. It's just these four minutes that stank.

This performance looks way off to me. Except in her dreams the real Edie would never have connected with a Broadway Audience, and that was part of her appeal. This Edie belongs on The View. Is this show as superficial as it looks?

Grey Gardens was amazing. What a pity it has closed so soon. The cast was great and Christine Ebersole is a goddess.
